About..

Hotel La Chope..(in English it means a 'tankard', 'drinking mug' or 'stein')

We are located close to the centre of HESDIN and near to the original and medieval 'Porte d'Arras', and there's been an Hôtel on this site for many years.

Prior to the 1950's, and until it's name was changed from Hôtel Belle Vue in the early 70s, the Hôtel's history is not well documented but it's believed that there has been a hostelry here since the late 17th century. The current building, whilst imposing and full of character, has been the subject of considerable change over the decades.

In 2005, after its purchase by current owners, the Hôtel was extensively renovated to provide every comfort and modern convenience facilities but retaining many original features.

the Owners..

..are Katie & Eric RUSH - both English born but 'franco-phile' by nature - and have been living and working in the HESDIN area for more than 12 years.

We purchased our first French property as a week-end and holiday retreat in 1989, and fairly soon realised that a full-time move to France was exactly what we wanted.  That move was finally achieved in 1994 and we set up a business and warehouse close to HESDIN representing major software vendors within mainland Europe.

Since we initially looked at Hôtel La Chope in 1993, the idea of purchasing and renovating it had always been at the back of our minds.  The Hôtel had been closed for many years when we finally decided to realise our ambition, so in 2004 we purchased the building and set about the considerable task of restoring and re-furbishing the building.

Our objective was, and remains, to provide a warm and friendly welcome within a very 'cosy' and convivial ambiance.  Hopefully, you will visit us soon and tell us whether we have succeeded.

HESDIN..

..is an important and lively market town with historical links evident in many of its fine buildings.

Hesdin can trace its history back to 1554 when it was built following the destruction by Emperor Charles V of the original town (now 'Vieil Hesdin') some 6km to the west. (click HERE for links to more information about Hesdin's history)

Today the town is central to the "Sept Vallées" (7 Valleys) region which attracts many tourists and permanent residents seeking 'real France' without having to travel too far.

the '7 Vallées' and Côte d'Opale..

The "Sept Vallées" (7 Valleys) region is an small region to the east of Le Touquet and Etaples where the River Canche flows into the English Channel.  There are 7 smaller tributary rivers which flow into the Canche and hence the name.  The Canche valley and each of the 7 smaller valleys have very many pretty villages where visitors will find numerous attractions, good eating places and friendly people.

The "Côte d'Opale" is the 'Opal Coast' where the lively and popular resorts of Le Touquet, Berck, Stella, Merlimont etc. look out over the English Channel.  This coastline has more than 70km of golden, sandy beaches and many more attactions. (click HERE for links to more useful information)
